Learn more about Watches in Saudi Arabia:
Watches in Saudi Arabia are more than just tools for telling time; they are symbols of elegance, social status, and personal taste. The Saudi market offers a wide variety of watches, including classic traditional watches, modern fashion watches, and smartwatches that combine technology and style. Consumers rely on watches not only to track time but also as accessories that complement their appearance and reflect their lifestyle, whether for formal occasions or everyday wear.
Global and local brands in Saudi Arabia provide a wide range of carefully designed watches, featuring specifications such as water resistance, shock resistance, premium materials like steel and gold, and advanced digital displays in smartwatches. With technological advancements, smartwatches have become increasingly popular, offering features like heart rate monitoring, activity tracking, phone notifications, and even electronic payments, making them an essential part of daily life for many.
Local traditions and culture also influence watch selection, with some preferring luxurious, conservative designs while others opt for practical and tech-savvy watches. Thanks to this diversity, Watches in Saudi Arabia have become symbols of quality, elegance, and innovation, catering to all age groups and professions and forming an integral part of contemporary lifestyle.
What are The Most Notable Early Types of Watches in Saudi Arabia?
Sundial:
The sundial is considered one of the oldest methods for telling time, and it reflected the cycles in the sky for people to see. Its use was common in ancient Greece, and it largely relied on shadows to determine time through a circular device, which shows the time between sunrise and sunset. One drawback of this clock is that it cannot be used to determine time at night.- Water Clocks:
Around 3,400 years ago, the Egyptians were innovating devices to measure time. They discovered that the flow of water through a hole in a water-filled vessel occurs at a constant rate, which led them to invent the water clock. In ancient water clocks, water would flow from a small hole near the bottom of a stone container. The markings engraved on the walls of the vessel indicated the time, as people could tell the time by the amount of water remaining in the container. - History of Hourglasses:
This type of watch is widely available and well-known in Saudi Arabia. The hourglass consists of two glass bulbs placed one above the other and connected through a small opening. The upper bulb is filled with fine sand, which slides down to the lower bulb, measuring the required time during the process. By filling the lower bulb and emptying the upper bulb, time is measured.
What is The History of Mechanical Watches?
About 700 years ago, the mechanical clock appeared in Europe. It operated using ascending and descending weights to measure elapsed time through the continuous movement of gears. However, these early clocks did not display time with hands; instead, they emitted sound signals every hour. Their accuracy was limited, as the signal could be delayed by about fifteen minutes per day.
Throughout history, energy sources used to power watches evolved, including gravity, electricity, and springs. The invention of the mechanical clock is attributed to the Chinese Liang Lingzan, but it did not become popular in the West until the 14th century CE. Mechanical clocks were used in monasteries during the Middle Ages to organize prayer times, and the process of developing and improving their accuracy continued over the years.
What is The History of Incense Watches?
One of the strangest methods people used to tell time in China during the 14th century CE was the incense clock. This clock was a carved line in the shape of a maze, containing a variety of incense shapes. Users would light the incense from one end, and the incense would continue burning until a full hour had passed. With the change in the scent of the incense each time, people could tell that the hour had ended.
What about The Elephant Clock?
The Elephant Clock is one of the famous ancient watches, created by the scholar Al-Jazari. It was a water clock that measured time twice daily, at sunrise and sunset. It was designed in the shape of a large elephant with a house on top, operated by mechanical men, and it also included a dragon and a phoenix. This clock combined symbols of ancient civilizations in its design: the dragon represented Asian civilization, the elephant represented Indian civilization, and the phoenix represented ancient Egyptian civilization.
Over time, watches evolved to include the pendulum clock and clocks powered by a hairspring, which is characterized by consistent oscillation. Despite significant advances in watchmaking, these clocks could not measure time with perfect accuracy because the pendulum or spring is affected by pressure and temperature, which alter their oscillation and thus change the time measurement. Studies have shown that the most accurate “clock,” with almost no possible error, is the Earth itself, since the time it takes to complete one rotation on its axis is perfectly constant.
What about The First Wristwatch?
The first small wristwatch was made in the 16th century by the German locksmith Peter Henlein. After more than ten years of research and study, Henlein succeeded in inventing a mainspring that provided the watch with the energy needed to operate. The manufacture of this type of watch spread during the modern era in England, Switzerland, and France. It was later developed to include a minute hand and then a second hand to increase timekeeping accuracy.
Over time, there was a need to design a watch suitable for women, which led to the creation of the small wristwatch worn on the wrist. During wars, soldiers needed wristwatches instead of pocket watches to quickly tell the time. Initially, wristwatches were worn by both men and women, and with technological development, electronic watches powered by batteries were produced. Later, quartz watches appeared, which are more accurate than traditional electronic watches.
What about Watches in the Modern Era?
Today in Saudi Arabia, most watches rely on electrical power, similar to other electronic devices. Some watches operate using small batteries that activate electric motors through magnetic interaction, while others depend on galvanic force generated by balance wheels and springs.
Another category includes resonance-powered watches, which use electrically driven tuning forks to generate motion. These watches are among the most accurate due to their high operating frequencies compared to traditional mechanical watches.
In the digital age, markets are filled with a wide range of watches offering diverse functions. Some display time digitally, others provide voice-assisted information, and many serve as multifunctional accessories incorporating phone connectivity, cameras, and smart features. Despite this diversity, the fundamental purpose of watches remains unchanged: measuring time accurately to meet daily human needs.
What are the Leading Types of Watches in Saudi Arabia?
Swiss watches are widely regarded as the finest in the world due to their precision, craftsmanship, and advanced technology. Known for luxury and durability, Swiss watches are exported globally and are readily available in Saudi Arabia’s most prestigious retail outlets.
On a global scale, certain countries dominate watch production and export. China leads in export volume, while Switzerland excels in producing high-quality luxury watches. Swiss watches are among the most expensive worldwide, cementing Switzerland’s reputation as a leading watchmaking nation.
